Buildin BBQ Laws\Regulations

Post by dallasf »

Hi,

New to forum but have done some extensive reading. However have been unable to find information on buildin BBQ's in my specific case.

I wanted to buy the Matador 3 burner bbq. http://www.matadorbbqs.com.au/product-d ... urner.aspx and build a case for it. The case would have have a specific cement sheeting lined around the BBQ itself which is fire and water proof, it would have the correct air ventilation at the rear of the BBQ. The frame would be made from structural pine and the outside would be done in Merbau decking.

However, after reading through the instructions it highlights that no combustible material should be within 430mm on the sides or should not sit on anything combustible.

Are these instructions an advisory or are they actual law?

I want to place the BBQ on my deck which they are saying is not allowed and having the frame built from timber seems to deem this 'not allowed' either.

Because the BBQ will be in a non combustible cement sheeting does this protect me?
I assume if I proceed not following these recommendation do I void my home insurance?

Don't want to void the house insurance and burn it down, so thought i should ask.

Thanks guys.

Hi and welcome,

I'm not sure when you say you want to build a case but I'm thinking you mean a surround for the BBQ?

Plenty of people have their gas BBQs on wooden decks, seeing as the gas is contained and won't drop on the deck in most cases, the same can't be said for charcoal bbqs as if you're using heat beads or lump charcoal, theres always the possibility of dropping on on your deck and burning it.

I'd ring up and check with your insurance company in regards to what they'll allow before you start the project because they can be a bit fickle when it comes time to pay up in case of tragedy.

Theres a few members here that have built their own BBQ area who might be able to advise you better than I can, I'm the type if you place and hammer in my hand, i'll look at you and say "now what?"

Good luck with it.

Cheers

Hi Dallasf

Mate pretty much all metal bbqs have the same clearance (ceramics are a little different) 450 to combustible surfaces. hence very very timber trolleys on the market these days.

We have an outdoor kitchen built for us for customers and to achieve the necessary clearances the bbq sits in a 2mm sealed 304 stainless steel box that has an approved fire-proof board lining it, so there is no heat transfer in the event of something going wrong.

AS 5601 is the gas code and would have some information in it re clearances. Also check with your local authoity as well for any special conditions that may apply.

Good luck with project

I'm a fire certifier but Unfortunately I don't specialise in domestic stuff other then multy dwelling buildings.
There is an Australian standard for built in BBQ,s and I think it is AS 5601. So check that out. I don't have that section but you might know someone that does ( Gas fitter)
The other thing is that the fibre cement manufacture will have a "System" that has been tested and deemed to satisfy fire resistance so that would also be on your search list.
If trees screamed when we cut them down, We wouldn't. If they screamed all the time we would.

Sorry had a brain fade at the time and went with case, definitely an enclose is what i meant.

So am I assuming that if the bbq is enclosed in a 2mm stainless steel box i would be allowed to have timber within the 430mm clearance?

This is great guys, thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction.

Cheers

Hardwood timber such as Merbau, Spotted gum and Ironbark are safe aroung BBQ. These hardwoods are fire & pest resistant.
Just build 50sqm 140x19 merbau decking with my BBQ on it. Bought my Merbau decking timber in Campbellfield, A Grade Timber and pretty competitive price www.outdecoliving.com.au
